Living in Cornwall it is a long way from London. I travelled to London on Friday with most of the Newquay Road Runners, entrants. As soon as we arrived we checked into the hotel and made our way to the expo to collect our running numbers and chips etc.

Technical Diving in Phuket

It may not sound like a technical diving location, but around Thailand there is some very deep water. Mark Ellyatt did his 313m world record dive in the waters off Phuket. Continue reading this entry »

Porthkerris this year.

Sunday saw my first trip to Porthkerris this year, as it is a reasonably local dive site for me I go there when I need to. Sunday was when I needed a shore dive, I was accompanying my mate Neville on his first UK dive. It was also going to be Andy’s test dive with his first twinset.

Porthkerris has seen some changes over the last couple of years, now that Mike is running things.

Underwater GPS System - In Development.

Something that people have always asked about is why can we not develop a GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) system to work underwater?

GPS is difficult to use underwater for a couple of reasons, firstly the frequency used, 1.5ghz, does not propogate in sea water. Secondly it is to do with the amount of data needed to constantly update the information, in water there is a limited range and very limited reliability.

I have been speaking to some GPS experts, they have a receiver that is quoted to work ‘in a tin under the stairs’. It also works 12′ underwater, now that might not seem very far, but it is a huge step in technology. They have also told me of another receiver unit that will work a lot deeper, they are trying to get hold of a unit to test. I have offered my services to test its receiving capabilities underwater using my video camera housing.

I just hope they manage to get hold of a unit to test.

Anti-biotics and Cramps.

This may or may not be old news, but it was new to me, and I thought I’d let anyone know who didn’t previously.

A week ago I had a dental implant, after the surgery I was given two anti-biotics to take as a precaution. Amoxycillin, which I have had once before, and Metronidazole, which I have never heard of. As someone who tries to keep fit, I asked the dentist whether I should lay off exercise for a couple of days, he agreed purely from the surgery side of things. I searched the net for some info on Metronidazole, as I had never taken it before and found that some of the side effects could be drowsiness or fatigue, oh well! It wouldn’t affect my running too much. Or would it?
