100th Dive 22/08/06
Whenever I get asked how many dives I have done, I always state I have no idea. I used to guess at about 100 a year on average, to which people said thats 2 a week, no way could I be doing 2 a week. So this year I decided to count everydive. Continue reading this entry »
Raglan’s Reef, The Manacles
Last Friday evening we ended up diving Raglan’s Reef on the Manacles. Raglan’s is probably my favourite of all the pinnacles on the Manacles due to the range of life on it and tonight I had a pleasant surprise. The top of Raglan is about 6m down, Shaun had decided that he was going to drop the shot on the pinnacle, not as easy as it sounds as it is only a few metres across. After a couple of attempts, it kept falling off, it looked like it was in place so I jumped in. Continue reading this entry »
100 Best Dives in Cornwall - Charles Hood
I have had this book for quite some time now. It was one of the first books I bought on diving, I don’t buy many. I do like the layout, information and pictures. Some of the co-ordinates are a bit out though, if you read this Charles check the Kantoeng co-ordinates. Anyway, a while ago I thought it would be a good idea to do all the dives in between other dives of course. Most of the dives listed are within the capabilities of either BSAC Sport Diver or PADI Advanced Open Water. Continue reading this entry »
Videoing the Epsilon
Last night Redeemer was going out, it had been booked by a local dive school for 5 people, so Shaun was trying to fill it. Colin had a group of 5 so that left me and Andy a space. The site hadn’t been decided but as the school had booked it and requested the Epsilon that’s where Shaun decided to go. Continue reading this entry »
Searching for Rope and the Kantoeng Dredger Arm
It may seem like a strange title, but thats what I did on Saturday. We had been asked to try and find a couple of hundred pounds worth of rope and fittings that fell on a sailing boat. We had a rough location, and being up for anything we said we’ll have a go. We launched at Fowey, our favourite launch site on the south coast and headed out. Clear skies and flat seas again. Sharky had brought a friend for her first Uk dive, we were going to let her dive on our second dive. Once again the story has been written up on Travel-Dive, but if you don’t want to have a read then, a quick summary. Continue reading this entry »
Hellopes Wreck, Penzance
This was my first time on the Hellopes. It is a very popular wreck in Mounts Bay, everyone who has dived it has enjoyed it. Now it was my turn. Its not a huge wreck at 2774 tons, but it is still a decent size, and at a depth of 36m, it gives you a reasonable bottom time on nitrox. We headed out of Penzance on Redeemer on a nice flat sea and I kitted up a s quickly as possible to get in first. Everyone gets upset when I come out last. The wreck lies on its port side and is failry intact for its age. For a full report and some photos have a look at Travel-Dive.com
It was a very nice and interesting wreck, there are loads of places to swim into it and well worth several visits. I will do it again, soon.
Scoff hunt
I usually write all my dives up on Travel-Dive.com, but Saturday Evenings dive wasn’t really worth writing about. We had been invited to a BBQ at Colin’s place. The sea had been rough during the day, as well as all the wind and rain you would expect on an English summers day. The estuary was looking flat and as we all fancied a dive, we though we’d try and get some food for the BBQ.
By the time everyone was ready we left Penryn at around 6:30pm, the clouds had dispersed and the sun had come out. The wind from earlier in the day had subsided and we looked at each other thinking what else would you rather be doing. We tried to find the S.S. Stanwood, we didn’t have the marks, but it is by the north bank buoy, well at least it was. They have moved the buoy! So we decided to go over to the eastern narrows buoy. We jumped in and went to the bottom looking for Scallops, Crabs and Lobsters. Scallops came thick and fast, as did the odd bottle, a couple of crabs put up a fight, but one lost. I had decided not to take my camera, if I am taking pictures I wouldn’t collect anything, you can guess when happened. I managed to get close to five Thornback rays, all in clear water, waiting for their photo to be taken.
30 Scallops, 1 crab and 3 bottles later I surfaced and we all headed towards Colin’s to eat our scoff ![]()
